As 15-year-old Lane Mckenzie rides his horse up to the arena, he says a quick prayer. The arena is packed with family and friends yelling his name and cheering. He feels his heart racing inside. He and his partner wait for the gate to open. They chase a steer, ready to rope it – all in only a few seconds. Mckenzie has competed in the sport of rodeo for the last seven years, and loves the sport.

The KHS Roaring Lion Band’s show for this year is titled “In The Secret Garden” and is based on a childhood novel and movie. It is a combination of visual beauty and musical power and helped the band earn top honors at Wednesday’s UIL Marching Band Competition.

Kaufman hosted this year's Special Olympics recently. This annual event included many schools such as Athens Hornets (first year), Canton Eagles, Crandall Pirates, Mabank Panthers and many more. Twenty-one students from Kaufman participated, winning 10 gold medals, seven silver and four bronze.

As tryouts get underway, 32 girls are stressed out and nervous waiting for their group’s turn before the judges. Each group consists of three or more girls and an officer candidate, they will perform a jazz routine, a kick sequence, and will present their elements to the judges.

Run with the Pride 5K set for this weekend

The Run with the Pride 5K and 1-mile fun run will be held on Saturday. Each race will begin and end at Jackson street and Mulberry street on the southwest corner of the square. Free parking lots are located behind the Courthouse Annex building, 100 N. Washington St., and at the First Baptist Church of Kaufman, 302 S. Washington St. All ages are welcome. It’s ninth period and the sounds of Paul Baker’s “Arnge Drank” fill the band hall. Beautiful and catchy music is trumpeted (figuratively, and literally in some cases) by the KHS Jazz Band. The jazz band is an extracurricular activity that is only available for concert band members, and consists of many talented young musicians.
