About KHS Journalism

Black and Gold News is a project of the journalism and newspaper department at Kaufman High School under the direction of teacher Sean Chaffin, who also sponsors the school’s UIL journalism team. The newspaper was begun in 2013 with his first and fifth period newspaper and journalism classes. The site expanded from a blog to a broader online newspaper in May 2014.

2015 Texas Association of Journalism Educators Awards –  Five students eon Honorable Mention Awards from the Texas Association Educators.

  • Victoria Butler and Adriana Guillen for their story on English teacher Charlene Warnock’s Veterans Honor Wall, a writing project in her class in which students wrote letters to military veterans.
  • George Acker and Sierra Billeau for their story on the KISD Bond Election.
  • Christopher Hodgdon for his story on the election for Scottish independence.

2015 Dallas Morning News Journalism Day Awards – Peighton Farmer earned a Finalist Award for her feature story on KHS students involved in rodeo.
