The Lions varsity football team opened the season with a heartbreaking loss 42-39 last Friday against Lindale.

At 5:25 in the first quarter, Lindale scored on a screen pass from deep in Lions’ territory. Later in the quarter, the Lions evened the score at 7-7 when quarterback Jefferson Fritz connected to wide receiver Tre Collier for a 46-yard touchdown on third and long. A few minutes later, the Lions kept the Eagles out of the end zone when cornerback Jordan Fuentes made a huge interception at the Kaufman 14. The Lions later turned the ball over on a fumble and the Eagles staged a drive.

In the second quarter, the Eagles took a lead at 11:55 when the Lindale quarterback scrambled off the right side for a 14-7 lead. The Lions answered back with a big 34-yard pass from Collier to Fritz, who was lined up at wide receiver. Running back Devin Morris had a big run to the Eagles’ 6 and then ran it in for the TD, tying the game at 14-14.

The defense then had a big play as Dre Prox recovered a fumble and returned it 15 yards to the 50 with 1:40 left in the half. The Lions later punted with the Eagles taking over at their own 20. But the Lions held the Eagles out of the end zone before half with the score at 14-14.

At 7:43 In the third quarter, the Lions got a penalty on a punt, leading to a re-punt. The snap was fumbled in the end zone and the Eagles recovered for a touchdown and 21-20 lead.

The Lions didn’t give up and answered right back. Fritz came through with a 63-yard run to pay dirty. The extra point was no good with the Eagles still in the lead, 21-20, with 7:35 in third quarter.

The Lions defense came through on the next drive and the Eagles punted to the Lions 1, but Morris hit a big 32-yard run on first down to move the ball out and the Lions ground game driving.

As the fourth quarter started, the Eagles led 21-20. The Lions went ahead when wide receiver Marquithias Johnson went in for a touchdown at 11:43. The Lions did not convert the two-point attempt, and led 26-21 in third. The two teams continued to battle back and forth with the Lions trailing 35-32 in the fourth quarter.

Late in the quarter, on fourth and 18, Casey Smith caught a 63-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline for a touchdown at 2:01. The PAT was good and the Lions led 39-35.

Unfortunately for the Lions, the Eagles mounted a drive ending with the Lindale QB scrambling in 15 yards for an Eagles touchdown with 39 seconds left. The PAT was good and led 42-39.

On the kickoff, Johnson came through with a big return to the Lions’ 45. The Lions then connected on 61-yard touchdown pass to Fritz, but it was called back for holding. The Lions came up short 42-39 against a tough 5A opponent. The team hopes to regroup and bring home their first victory this Friday at home against Mineola.
