As time approaches to defend either the affirmative or negative side, the debaters get ready to speak their mind. The topic is “In the United States, wealth inequality is detrimental to democratic ideals,” and they’ll be debating for the next hour.

“The true meaning of debate is arguing logically,” says Huff, who has been teaching the debate class for four years.

The No. 1 fear in the U.S. is speaking in front of people, and debaters do it all the time. People are scared of speaking in front of people more than they are scared of death, spiders, snakes, and more.

Debate students all enjoy debating against one another but when it comes to learning or preparing for a special debate, it gets tough.

“There’s so much to learn with debate, it’s like a foreign language,” says Huff.

Debate students argue and practice to win on a side of an issue. Huff starts class with what we call “Today’s Debate,” which is a current event in the world, whether is the upcoming presidential election, school’s shooting, or gun control, they discuss everything and hear all of the different opinions.

Huff is excited to hear about new students and enjoys to teach them different topics about debate.

LD Debate means one on one and there are always two cases, the affirmative and the negative. In the affirmative, debaters agree with the topic meanwhile in the negative, they disagree with topic. Kaufman students are getting ready for the District Competition on April 5 at Mabank.

At competitions, teams have at least three rounds and take about an hour long. In order to be a good debater, one needs to be smart, a good speaker, confident, and willing to say what’s on his or her mind.

For those interested in debate, Huff says she is free ninth period and is ready for new students to come by and join.
