The Kaufman Lions cross country teams took home only gold at the district meet on Oct. 14, making it the 10th year in a row.
“Winning is always a good feeling,” coach Denver Stone said. “I was proud of how the kids performed This made our 10th consecutive district championship, so that also added to the excitement. It is really hard to win 10 district championships in a row and we talk about not taking any championships for granted.”
Taking the lead for girls varsity was Ellie Galan, who won first (12:28). Alondra Campa took second (12:41), Taylor Sandberg came in third (12:48), Amanda Rodriguez came in 7th (13:28), and running alongside her Leslie Gonzales placed eighth (13:29). Also for the Lady Lions, Bianca Atuna came in 11th (13:55), and Priscilla Sanchez placed 13th (14:22).
Running for the varsity boys: Christian Rivera placed first (15:48), Spencer Keith placed second (16:28). Edwin Olvera placed fourth (17:09), a second behind Noah Mcbride ran fifth (17:10), Marshall Pate placed eighth (17:23), Jayson Tucker placed 11th (17:44), and Carlos Sanchez placed 13th (17:38).
Also placing first, the junior varsity girls took the top five spots in the division. Aleisha Ford placed first (13:48), Maiya Rodriguez placed second, (13:48), Paloma Leos placed third (14:33), Hayley Tucker placed fourth (14:38), and Marizit Puente placed fifth (14:42). Jaira Garcia placed seventh (15:24), Kairi Oliver placed eighth (15:38), Olivia Burrows placed 11th (15:46), Katarina Cunningham placed 12th (15:55), Denise Saucedo placed 17th (16:53), and Angela Ritter placed 19th (17:05)
The junior varsity boys did just as well placing first in their division, with Jesus Leja running first (17:54). Patrick Mitchell placed second (18:18), Jeb Williamson placed third (18:40). Brandon Tousignant placed fifth (19:25), Jesse Baxley placed sixth (19:30), Noah Nerio placed ninth (19:59), Noah Yeldell 11th (20:28), Preston Smith placed 13th (20:43), Ivan Flores 16th (20:54), Skylar Marcellas-Ojeda 18th (20:58), Ede Garcia placed 19th (21:01), Brian James 27th (21:59), and Paul Bradicich-Shelton placed 34th (23:06).
“My main advice for the runners is to trust their training,” Stone advised his runners as they prepared for the regional meet. “The training is what puts you into the best position to run your best, when your best is needed.”
