Sophomore Connor Smith is a 15 year old with big dreams. Smith’s passion for basketball is shown on the court every Tuesday and Friday during the basketball season. Last year, Smith was the only freshman on varsity, but faced a major challenge in overcoming a summer injury.

At a basketball camp in Kansas, Smith was “balling out” when he suddenly felt a pain it his foot. He partially tore his achilles tendon and cracked his heel.

“It hurt really, bad but I kept playing the rest of the camp,” he said.

Smith has now been out since the beginning of June. He has not picked up a basketball since June 15 at the camp. The injury sat Smith out all summer, leaving him bored and out of shape.

On Sept. 18, Smith was cleared to play again.

“It feels great!” Smith said. “It gives me something to do. I’m not always bored!”

Smith will be on the court this season. Last season the team made it to the second round of playoffs, losing to Decatur.

“The team is looking really good,” says Smith. “We are getting ready to take on district.”

The next step is to try and get in shape.

“Now that I am healed and healthy, it is time to get to work,” Smith said. “Getting back in shape won’t be easy, but i’m looking forward to a great season with me and the boys.”
