KHS plays Mineola tonight and here’s a story from the past (Nov. 11, 2013) about a huge fight between the two teams in 1968.

KHS will be fighting it out in the playoffs this Friday, but several decades ago the Lions were involved in a different kind of fight on the field. It was 1968 and Kaufman and Mineola were battling for the district title in Mineola. Kaufman won, of course, to advance to the playoffs. All of the sudden a huge fight broke out toward the end of the game — with players, fans, and police all involved.

The fight was so big police were dragging people and handcuffing them to fences to keep them from re-entering the fight! Stands emptied … it was a real mess. Mike Yudizky was the quarterback for KHS that night. It was a big game with an explosive ending.

“It was district championship and Mineola was ranked in the state so Kaufman was not expecting to win the game,” he said. “The Mineola team had a very good fullback that went to college to play for Texas A&M University. Towards the end of the game Kaufman was winning and Mineola was getting frustrated because they thought it was going to be a blowout. Cops started coming on the field to break up the fight and that was the fun part.”

Dr. Lori Blaylock, KISD superintendent and a graduate of Mineola, was at the game and remembers the ruckus that broke out.

“Almost everyone in Kaufman remembers the huge fight that broke out toward the end of the game,” she said.

The unique ending is just another footnote in the history and tradition of KHS football. Hopefully the Lions win against Kilgore on Friday, without any police involvement.

This was really a cool story, a little bit of the Wild West in a football game. I think these guys captured the scene pretty well. ——– Mr. Chaffin
