As Taylor Sandberg’s eyes followed the ball, she waited anxiously to attack. She jumped up and swung at the ball hitting it to the deep corner. She glanced over to the line judge to see if her hit was good enough to win the game. The judge’s flag rippled as he motioned it straight down to show that the ball was in, and the junior varsity volleyball team won the game.

Sandberg is one of the two freshmen on the JV volleyball team. She competes as a middle hitter on the team and is also a varsity cross country runner. She is one of three freshmen on the varsity cross country team, and one out of the two freshmen on the JV volleyball team.

Because most of team was just sophomores, Sandberg was nervous. She didn’t want to be looked down on because of her age.

“To my surprise,” she  said, “they were all super supportive and they all treated me as a part of the team.”

As a freshmen, Sandberg has a bigger chance of going to state, because she is on the Varsity cross country team.

“I have always accomplished more and more in cross country,” Sandberg said. “So I would like to pursue that in college if i had the chance.”

So far Sandberg’s greatest achievement was when she got a kill and won game point against Crandall. She enjoys being on more advanced teams because the competition is more intense, and she is pushed to be a better athlete by her coaches and teammates.

“She is very coachable and is a well rounded athlete,” coach Nick Morales said.

Being a student athlete also requires athletes to manage their school work, so Taylor studies and does her homework at games or on her free time.

“I love being an athlete,” Taylor said, “because I love the thrill of competing.”
