Coach Denver Stone was pleased with the team’s overall performance against tough competition at the Lovejoy invitational on Saturday.

“I’m excited to see them improve and work hard,” Stone said.

To compete at their best, varsity teams were split into two groups, the elite varsity and the 4A/under varsity. The elite varsity is comprised of Kaufman Lions fastest varsity runners, and 4A/under varsity is made up of the rest of the varsity girls who are not quite as fast.

The elite varsity girls placed 12th out of 19 teams. Ellie Galan placed 13th (18:54), Alondra Campa placed 35th (19:44), Taylor Sandberg placed 51th (20:06). Amanda Rodriguez placed 106th (21:10), Leslie Gonzales placed 135th (22:16), and Jaira Garcia placed 160th (23:41) out of 174 runners.

The 4A/under varsity girls took second out of 10 teams for Kaufman Lions.  Aleisha Ford placed sixth in her division (21:46), Bianca Antuna placed eighth (22:22). Priscilla Sanchez placed 13th (22:48), Hayley Tucker placed 17th (23:13), Maiya Rodriguez placed 18th (23:20), and Marizit Puente placed 19th (23:23)out of 64 runners.

Elite varsity boys placed 21st out of  32 teams. Out of  255 runners Christian Rivera placed 22nd (15:59), Spencer Keith placed 51th (16:30), Edwin Olvera placed 117th (17:06). Noah Mcbride placed 126th (17:16), Jayson Tucker placed 161th (17:38), and Marshall Pate placed 175th (17:45).

The 4A/under varsity boys placed eighth out of 14 teams, Jeb Williamson placed 14th (18:43), Patrick Mitchell placed 36th (19:32), Ivan Flores placed 51th (19:55). Brandon Tousignant placed 67th (10:38). Jesse Baxley placed 75th (20:58), Noah Nerio placed 79th (21:06), Ede Garcia placed 99th (22:31), Preston Smith placed 100th (22:36), and Skylar Marcellus-Ojeda placed 101th (22:40) out of 127 runners.

With records being broken and high expectations being met, the cross country season is going well this year. Galan, a freshman, met one of her goals for the 5k. On Sept. 10, Galan beat her previous record of 19:01, becoming the first girl ever at KHS to come in under the 19-minute mark, resetting the school’s 5k record to 18:54.

With more records hopefully soon to be broken, KHS cross country is hard at work and ready for more challenges.
