After sending two teams to state, last season, and taking the first place overall as a team at the Ray Hubbard tournament, this year the KHS Fishing Team is looking to build on that success and compete in the first tournament this Saturday, at Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall.

The two weeks prior to the tournament, anglers spend their time either pre-fishing the lake or looking around trying to find where the fish are on the lake, what the fish are biting, and how deep to fish.

The day before a tournament, competitors wake up around 5 a.m. to try and make it to their spots on the lake to get that early morning bite. Anglers stay on the boat anywhere from 8-10 hours a day trying to find the right spots and the right baits to use during the tournament.

“There are nine teams in the club this year,” fishing team sponsor Steve Holland said. “Several of the teams will do great this year, but there are a lot of new teams that I am unsure about.”

The team will compete with each other to win the title and $250 of scholarship money as KHS Angler of the Year. That title can also win Angler of the Year with Texas High School Bass Association (THSBA) which is $500 a team member.

Anglers will compete in five tournaments, and can qualify they will compete in the regionals tournament, then the state tournament if you qualify by placing high enough in rankings at regionals. The first place scholarship prize at the state tournament is $20,000, but if there are two fisherman fishing together, that money will be split to $10,000 in scholarships a piece.
