Kaufman fans welcomed the basketball teams into the new gym on opening night on Jan. 20. The new gym has a total of 1,400 seats, a graphic of a lion’s eyes on one wall, and the American and Texas flags on the other side. The floor has a unique charcoal stain to it with a glossy finish. In the middle of the floor is a giant “K” and Kaufman going down the sides of the floor.

There was a big crowd of people in the stands that night, students with megaphones in the second row, and  teachers and administration in the foyer. It was a scene of basketball players on the floor, coaches yelling, and people with cameras taking pictures.

“Its perfect, nice. I went to school at Kaufman High School in 1984 when the old gym was still being played in and it’s nothing like the new gym,” said KHS graduate Raymond Choyce.

Most students and teachers loved the new gym, and there was plenty of excitement. Theresa Francis sold tickets and said there were fast sales.

The junior varsity and varsity basketball boys won their first game in the new gym against Ferris to break in the new facility with a couple victories.

Senior Will Sisson said about the night: “Coming off of a five-game winning streak and to play our rivals and open a new gym is a pretty great feeling.”
