The Madden series of football video games has a long history in the sports gaming industry and has proven to be one of the most popular game series of all time.

The game is named after Football Hall of Famer John Madden, former Super Bowl-winning coach of the Oakland Raiders. The first video game  came out in 1988, mainly for computers. The second version of  Madden  came out in 1990, and was  the first for video consoles, the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis platforms.

Madden NFL 2008 was the seventh best selling video game of all time in the United States with 6.6 million copies sold.

As of 2016, Madden  has sold more than 100 million copies of Madden NFL for more than $4 billion in total sales. Just this year, Madden 17  sold 780,317 copies during its first week of release. No doubt EA will produce a version for many years to come.
