Following Disney’s purchase of the Star Wars franchise, the company released the successful Episode 7, “The Force Awakens” and are currently developing Episode 8. While continuing the famous saga, Disney is also expanding it with planned spin-off stories such as the upcoming “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

The first trailer for, “Rogue One”, displayed an amazing work of visual effects, and a deeper glimpse into what’s to come. So far the trailer has gotten up to 22 million views on youtube, with more trailers on the way it is likely this will be one of the years’ biggest movies.

“Rogue One” takes place during the time span between Episodes 3 and 4. It’s about a group of resistance fighters for the rebellion on a dangerous mission to steal the plans to the first Death Star, “currently under construction at this time.” The story centers around Jyn Erso, a girl in trouble with the rebellion. From the trailer, it looks like she is the one leading this mission.

Aside from Jyn, there is a number of other characters such as Saw Gerrera, a character in both the movie and in the “Star Wars: the Clone Wars,” TV show. Saw was a resistance fighter on his home planet Onderon. He and a band of other rebels fought against their planet’s king who had sided with the separatists during the clone wars. It is unknown what his role is in “Rogue One” at this point. He most likely he is a fighting member of the rebellion. But whatever it is, it should be interesting to see on the big screen.

K-2SO, an imperial enforcer droid originally created by the galactic empire for use in its armed forces, is the main droid character in this new “Star Wars” movie. At some point, he came in contact with Captain Cassian Andor of the rebellion and managed to reprogram him. K2SO now fights for the rebellion. It is also unknown how he will affect the story, but could be a new favorite droid to look forward to.

Then there’s Orson Krennic, a member of the galactic empire and director of the death star project. It’s likely he is the main antagonist in this story.

Another character, Chirrut Imwe, was a blind man born on the moon of Jedha, a spiritual warrior and monk. Chirrut and his friend Baze Malbus are members of the band of rebels who fought to steal the top secret plans to the Death Star. As for Baze, who was also a resident of the moon Jedha, he was a freelance assassin during the time of the galactic empire. A dedicated friend, Baze was a devoted protector of Chirrut Imwe. But unlike his friend, he had no belief in spirituality or mystical entities like the force. With Chirrut at his side they played an important role in the mission to steal the death star plans.

Captain Cassian Andor was leading member and intelligence officer in the rebellion, and was assigned to watch over Jyn Erso on the mission to steal the Death Star plans.
Besides them there are also a few other characters you might be familiar with such as Senator Bail Organa and Mon Mothma, the founders of the Rebel Alliance. Plus the one and only Darth Vader appears in the new film. That’s right, Darth is back and voiced once again by legendary actor James Earl Jones. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” hits in theaters Dec. 2016.
