Along with the H wing and the new gym, the ag shop also opened Jan. 4. The new ag shop is slightly larger, according to ag teacher Jonathan Deaton, and better organized because of a new setup.

Adia Mackenzie eyed the ball as she waited for it to reach her. She yelled four to tell her teammates what set was coming. Her fingertips touched the ball, she pushed the ball to the left front and a teammate slammed the ball down for a point. The girls on the court and in the bleachers yelled, “ah boom kill shot.”

As Taylor Sandberg’s eyes followed the ball, she waited anxiously to attack. She jumped up and swung at the ball hitting it to the deep corner. She glanced over to the line judge to see if her hit was good enough to win the game. The judge’s flag rippled as he motioned it straight down to show that the ball was in, and the junior varsity volleyball team won the game.

Kaufman Lion cross country teams ran a 5k and took first place for every division two weeks ago in Grand Prairie at the Ken Gaston Invitational.

Sophomore Connor Smith is a 15 year old with big dreams. Smith’s passion for basketball is shown on the court every Tuesday and Friday during the basketball season. Last year, Smith was the only freshman on varsity, but faced a major challenge in overcoming a summer injury.

RoboticsFreshman Harrison Lowder has finally finished his dumping mechanism prototype. After one week of hard work he is ready to test it. Thankfully it works like a charm. But there is one little problem, the prototype is one inch too big, which means he has to retake measurements again and make another prototype. However, Lowder knows this is not a big deal. In robotics, that’s what prototypes are for – to fail but rebuild again.

It's Friday night and the lights are shining bright on the Kaufman football field during halftime. The Lionettes are ready for their performance. They strut out onto the field, and get to their spots, and the officers are announced. The stadium goes silent, the band plays, and the Lionettes start kicking their hats and hitting their splits for another knock out performance.The officers are a big part of the drill team and they push the girls to be the best the can be.

“You have cancer.” It's a terrifying thing to hear, a nightmare. In November 2012, this became a possibility for freshman Cade Pearson when doctors told him he may have melanoma, a rare type of skin cancer. In March 2013, these words became a reality. Cade was diagnosed with Spitzoid Melanoma, which is similar to a benign skin lesion. Unfortunately, however, his was cancerous.

From the smallest screen to the widest screens, Samsung has upped their game since 2015 when they dropped the first Galaxy S6 Edge, and a year later the S7 Edge. Since then, Samsung has been looking for ways to improve its technology and bring more consumers in. Samsung has announced that they will be releasing the Galaxy S8 and S8+. This phone is expected to compete with Apple products, specifically the iPhone 7+.

CONQUERING CANCER: Junior high teacher’s faith helps in battle with disease

It was a long, difficult summer for Norman Junior High eighth-grade teacher Jasmine Bonner. After being diagnosed with a devastating illness, she went through several rounds of chemotherapy which involved traveling to Houston every week. Because of the treatment, her hair began to fall out. It was difficult for her to do her everyday routine, and fatigue and weakness were some of her toughest side effects. Despite the situation, her faith got her through it.

After a long day of school Noah Yeldell had to retrieve his chainsaw and other equipment, than drove where the tree was located. After meeting the property owner, he setup his equipment and went to work. It only took about five minutes to cut up the small tree. His chainsaw started with a growl. Sawdust, and other wooden fragments flowed as the chainsaw ripped through the wood.

All the way from Cologne, Germany, over 5,000 miles, Luis Jansen is new to Kaufman and a long way from home. Being an exchange student is different and difficult. Being away from home and friends, not knowing any places or people, is not easy.
CAPTAIN OF THE SHIP: Katelyn Chandler leads Lionettes on the field and in competition

It’s Friday and Katelyn Chandler has early morning Lionettes practice at 6:45 a.m. on the field – so she wakes up early that morning to do her hair and makeup for the pep rally. In practice, the girls run the routine they are performing that night at the football game to make sure it looks good, then they dress and gather their equipment for the rally. Her role involves checking on the squad and making sure everything is lined up. After school, Chandler fixes or redoes her hair and makeup if needed. She gets dressed then she takes roll of the team – making sure everyone is there on time. Then she leads the team out to the stands – usually losing her voice by the end of the night.

The Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) audition process is designed to provide both recognition and meaningful musical experience for Texas’ student musicians. Selection to a TMEA performing organization requires stamina, talent, and a strong work ethic. The selection process has no favorites because every audition is blind. Regardless of background, only the best student musicians survive this process.

On a Friday night, the band waits eagerly on the field for the signal to begin. The drum majors stand ready at their podium, and with a simple arm movement the show begins. During the show, the drum majors have the pressure of the band and directors depending on them to keep everything running smoothly. Even off the field the drum majors cannot rest, they must control the band in the stands until the game is over.
BIG DAY: KHS unveils new gym, boys bring home win

Kaufman fans welcomed the basketball teams into the new gym on opening night on Jan. 20. The new gym has a total of 1,400 seats, a graphic of a lion’s eyes on one wall, and the American and Texas flags on the other side. The floor has a unique charcoal stain to it with a glossy finish. In the middle of the floor is a giant “K” and Kaufman going down the sides of the floor.

As 15-year-old Lane Mckenzie rides his horse up to the arena, he says a quick prayer. The arena is packed with family and friends yelling his name and cheering. He feels his heart racing inside. He and his partner wait for the gate to open. They chase a steer, ready to rope it – all in only a few seconds. Mckenzie has competed in the sport of rodeo for the last seven years, and loves the sport.

Tough was an understatement for Spanish teacher Vanessa Olgreen and her son Alex. Just a week before his ninth birthday, Alex was diagnosed with a rare cancer that afflicts only 1 percent of cancer patients. It’s called Ewing Sarcoma, a bone/tissue cancer found in young children or adolescents. Alex has it in his tissue. Since its discovery, there have been only 200 reported cases of this disease in the U.S.

The moment before going down the alleyway, junior Savanna Barnard’s heart starts racing. Her fingers start to tingle and her horse is jittery and jumpy. Waiting for the announcer to call her name, it feels like the wait of a lifetime. Her name sounds over the speakers, and it’s “go time.” She leads her horse down the alleyway slowly. When she hits the end, she kicks her horse, Logan, up and heads for the first barrel.

Imagine living during segregation, not being able to talk to who you wanted. Or drinking out of different water fountains, or feeling the tension in the air. It seems a bit difficult to think about all of this happening, even until the 1960s and right here in Kaufman.
